OZONE DEPLETION

WHAT IS OZONE DEPLETION?
Ozone depletion refers to the weakening of the upper-atmosphere ozone layer. The ozone layer blocks harmful UV radiation from reaching the earth's surface. Chemical compounds, such as chlorine and bromine, emitted by human activities and businesses, are to blame for the depletion of the ozone layer. 𝗈Due to an increase in the quantity of harmful violet (UV) radiation that penetrates Earth's surface, ozone depletion is a serious environmental hazard that raises the risk of skin cancer, eye cataracts, and genetic and immune system damage.

WHAT IS THE HOLE IN THE OZONE LAYER?

It is a slit that lets in a lot of UV radiation and it's at the poles, over Antarctica and the Arctic Ocean; as a consequence, spring in both hemispheres is brighter and summer lasts longer. Although natural variations in atmospheric ozone are partly to blame for the ozone hole, human activities also contribute to the problem by producing chemicals that go into the stratosphere and deplete ozone molecules, making the hole larger and more damaging. Since too much solar radiation is harmful to all forms of life, this is an issue for both the environment and human health.

  WHAT CAUSES OZONE?

Why Does Ozone Get Bad Reviews? "Bad" or ground-level ozone is not released into the atmosphere directly but is instead produced via the interaction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile compounds (VOCs) in the presence of sunlight. At ground level ozone is a harmful pollutant.

OZONE DEPLETING SUBSTANCES Man-made halocarbon refrigerants, solvents, propellants, and bubble agents (chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), HCFCs, halons) are the primary cause of ozone depletion and the ozone hole (ODS).

WHY IS THE OZONE LAYER IMPORTANT? Ozone, despite its low concentration in the ozone layer, is essential to life because it blocks the sun's physiologically dangerous ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Why should we protect the ozone layer?
CFCs do not react readily with other substances in the troposphere and lower atmosphere since they are highly stable compounds. Ultraviolet light one of the few known factors capable of dissolving chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) molecules. Since the ozone layer shields substances from UV radiation in the surrounding air, CFCs are safe there. To protect Earth from too much damage from UV radiation, the ozone layer is crucial. To say that ultraviolet radiation may cause skin cancer and cataracts in humans is an understatement. Because of the ozone layer, life can exist on Earth.
HOW CAN WE PROTECT THE OZONE LAYER?
Avoid the consumption of gases dangerous to the ozone layer owing to the nature of the materials used in their creation. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), halogenated hydrocarbons, methyl bromide, and nitrous oxide are some of the most hazardous gases. 𝗈Minimize the use of cars. In most cases, walking, riding a bike, or using public transit are the most convenient modes of transportation. Carpooling is a great way to reduce pollution, save money, and reduce your carbon footprint while commuting by automobile. 𝗈Donotusecleaningproductsthatareharmfultotheenvironmentandtous. Many cleaning solutions include solvents and corrosive compounds; however, you may substitute non-toxic items like vinegar or bicarbonate for these hazardous substances. Buy local products. You can avoid eating food that has travelled great distances and yet get your hands on the newest offerings in town. More nitrogen oxide is generated from the aluminum used to carry a product as the distance travelled increases.. Maintain air conditioners, as the functions cause CFC to escape in to the atmosphere.
